Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Heat 3 cups of oil over medium high heat.
  2. Place a wire rack on a baking sheet. (Line this with a paper towel to make clean up easier!)
  3. Roll a sheet of puff pastry out so it is a little thinner than it comes from the package.
  4. With a donut cutter, or a mason jar lid, cut out rounds of pastry dough.
  5. Using the water bottle lid, cut small holes in the center of each donut.
  6. Drop the donuts one at a time into the hot oil.
  7. It should only take about 30 seconds per side to cook, flip the donuts when they look perfectly golden brown. Don’t forget to fry the donut holes too. They will cook faster, so be prepared to drop them in, wait 20 seconds and pull them out with a slotted spoon.
  8. Pull from the oil and allow to cool on the wire cooling rack.
  9. After about 5 minutes of cooling and resting, sprinkle powdered sugar over the donuts and enjoy immediately!

More Recipe Tips

  • These donuts are not always best the next day. They are best to eat on the spot, maybe with a cup of coffee.
  • Texture of the donuts will be a bit spongey in the middle, that is normal and is the best consistency for your favorite sweet treat.
  • This quick treat is perfect for breakfast or an afternoon snack.
  • The first time I made these, I kept them in the oil for too long. Watch and make sure you do not burn them.
  • These are also so good as air fryer donuts too! Prepare them the same, except for with the oil, of course.
  • This recipe is an easy way to get the kids to learn how to deep fry. It would be easier to start with fresh donuts, rather than with a fried chicken recipe.
  • If you do not like powdered sugar, try a cinnamon sugar mixture instead. Either way is absolutely delicious.
  • For best results, as I mentioned above, they are best eaten on the spot. But if we do have any left-over (it’s not often, actually) I make sure I lay a paper towel in the bottom of an airtight container to soak up the extra oil.
  • Make sure you have enough oil to cover the donuts.
  • Oil temperature is key. It is usually at the right temperature when you see tiny bubbles starting to form.
